Weightlifting World Champs 2024 Start List: What We Know So Far

With the final entries list for the 2024 World Weightlifting Championships in Bahrain (December 6-15) now submitted, we’re awaiting its official release. Based on the preliminary list, here’s what fans can expect:

  • Final Entries Incoming: Each team typically submits a larger preliminary list and narrows it down by the final entry deadline. While some athletes may withdraw due to injury or other reasons, most of the top lifters are still expected to compete.

Highlights from the Preliminary Start List

  • Team North Korea: North Korea is sending an impressive roster, with six world-record-holding women and a full men’s team. They’re strong contenders to win team points, potentially unseating China for the first time in years.
  • Indonesia: Fans of the 81kg class can look forward to a showdown between Indonesian stars Rahmat Erwin Abdullah and Rizki Juniansyah, fierce rivals both aiming for top placement.
  • Karlos Nasar: The 89kg category will feature one of the sport’s biggest names, Karlos Nasar. Expect world record attempts (that’s what he told us!).
  • Lasha Talakhadze: Despite swirling rumors about retirement and his political involvement, Lasha Talakhadze appears on the preliminary list, though it’s not confirmed if he’ll remain on the start list. Fans will be watching closely.
  • Team USA: The USA has entered a huge squad of 20 women on their preliminary list, though they’ll cut down to the 10-lifter quota plus two reserves. Olympic champ Olivia Reeves is eyeing a return in the 71kg category, and her potential competitors include Liao Guifang (China) and Song Kuk-Hyang (North Korea). Liao, reportedly in top form, may shift up to the 76kg class, so keep an eye out for lineup changes.

The final list will soon reveal who will battle it out on the platform in Bahrain – and which athletes to watch closely as the competition kicks off!
